Andrew Makes A Home For Trixie
A Learn-About Book on Earthquake Safety
by
Jeanne Maree Iacono and Mary Mangiona
Illustrated By James D. Slay, III
This book is based on a true story that happened during a California earthquake. The story is presented in a factual way and is designed to help children understand what happens during an earthquake. It teaches preparedness and the necessity of following safety procedures. The story acknowledges that during and after an earthquake both adults and children are afraid. The story’s ending lets children know that there is recovery after a disaster.
The action-oriented drawings will help children identify with Andrew and the other children in the story and help them remember safety procedures. This story can be read to children or read by young readers. Because the story, itself, is true and interesting, children will want to hear or read it many times thus reinforcing in their minds earthquake preparedness and safety.
The illustrations are designed to give additional information that can be used for discussion. Also included at the end of the story is a Family Safety Check List which the authors compiled with the help of many disaster preparedness organizations.
